How to continue your exercise regime whilst pregnant.

Many people think that because you’re pregnant you have to stop your normal fitness regime but this is not always true. As long as you feel well and don’t start anything new then you should be safe to continue.

Exercising during your pregnancy can have great effects on both you and your baby, it’s can prevent excess weight gain, build muscle tone, strength and endurance which helps prepare your body for labour. Exercise can help prevent backaches, bloating and swelling and recent research show babies of mums who exercise have stronger healthier hearts.

If you already exercise frequently, depending on the type of training you currently do, you may need to tone it down a bit, use lighter weights for example, try not to push your heart rate too high and avoid contact sports.

Remember you must always consult your midwife or doctor if you have any questions and always stop immediately if you start to feel unwell whilst exercising.

Pregnancy can come with all sorts of barriers in your day to day life so you just have to listen to your body and don’t overdo anything. If you’re feeling extra tired then have a nap if possible or just put your feet up with a cuppa but on the days you’re feeling great then why not get out for a brisk walk, maybe join a local pregnancy Pilates class, try swimming or continue with your normal gym sessions which you may just need to tweak a little.

When I was pregnant I was lucky enough to feel great most of the time so I could continue with my normal gym workouts, I did a ballet class once a week also and went out for walks when I could but I totally understand not everyone feels this dandy and if there’s morning sickness involved too, then just getting through the day without being sick is a hard enough task as it is but remember that’s ok. Whatever is best for you and your little bump, don’t feel pressured into doing anything you’re not comfortable with, it doesn’t matter what the pregnant lady down the road is doing or the influencers on Insta, it’s what feels right for you.
